Caseys claim seventh straight title /CBA wins 22nd consecutive title
TOMS RIVER The Red Bank Catholic High School girls swimming team rolled a seven Sunday at the Shore Conference Championship meet.
The Caseys won the title for the seventh straight season at the Ocean County YMCA. They scored 393 points.
The fact we scored all four swimmers in the top eight in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 freestyle was phenomenal, said Matt Bowen, the Caseys seventh-year coach. We swam a ton of personal bests.
Red Bank Catholic set a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:36.39. The Caseys Shannon Belforti, Alli Villane, Jackie Van Lew and Jillian Crosby broke the previous record of 3:40.78 set by Rumson-Fair Haven Regional in 1990. It was the meets final event.
That record was unexpected, Bowen said. It was thrilling for our girls to cap such a great meet.
Van Lew, a freshman, won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.49.
I felt pretty confident I would win it, she said. Its my race. Its my best event and its my favorite event.
Van Lew, who won the meets second event, said she felt fine physically during the 200.
I felt really strong, she said. I felt well-rested and I felt really good in the water. I was a little behind in the first 50, but I started picking it up in the second 50.
I work really hard at swimming and the wins are the payoffs. I make a lot of sacrifices like practicing Friday night instead of going out.
The Caseys captured the first event, the 200 medley relay, in 1:52.12. Competing were Julianna Cavano, Shannon Slate, Karli Rymer and Van Lew. They narrowly missed the meet record of 1:52.04 set in 2006 by Rumson.
Colts Neck senior Noelle Klockner, who will swim for The College of William and Mary, won the 100 freestyle (52.87) and 100 backstroke (58.53). She credited her mother, Kristi Klockner, for a large part of her development.
She brings me to all of my meets, Klockner said. She cheers for me whether I do awesome or horrible. I love having her as my No. 1 fan.
Klockner said she was surprised to win two events.
Its amazing, she said. I am thrilled. All of the other girls are real fast. To win two events is something I always wanted to do and had not been able to do. I just wanted to win one event. To win two events is just amazing.
Manasquan established a meet record in the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.09). Hitting the wall were Kat Kazaba, Caroline Petrone, Erin Perna and Hannah Bryant. They pooled their talents to break the previous record of 1:41.80 set last year by Toms River North.
Bryant won the 50 freestyle in 24.39, overcoming an injury suffered a couple of weeks back to her right shoulder.
When I hurt it, it was inflamed and I was fatigued, she said. There was bone rubbing on bone. Its getting better. I felt real good today and I hope it stays that way.
Wall freshman Danielle Griggs captured the 100 butterfly in 5864.
Its great to win it, she said. I swam my best time and I worked so hard to get that time. I practiced five and six days per week on my turns and starts, making sure my stroke was strong and long.

BOYS
TOMS RIVER Heading into Saturdays Shore Conference Boys Swimming Championships, athletes from Christian Brothers Academy, Ocean and Central were expected to dominate the meet.
And thats largely how things played out, with CBA capturing its 22nd consecutive team title and Oceans Sam Lynch and Centrals Evan Mahoney each winning two individual events for the second consecutive year.
The first event at the Ocean County YMCA rewrote part of the script, however, as Toms River South came from behind to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:40.70, upsetting CBA and defending champion Ocean.
The Indians were in third and trailed first-place Ocean, which was expected to get off to a quick start behind Lynch and Mark Conte, by 2.28 seconds after the backstroke and breaststroke.
Then Nicholas Yodonis entered the pool. His 23.75 butterfly split, the best of the event by 1.33 seconds, lifted Toms River South in front of CBA and into second place, and Robert Newmans 22.74 freestyle anchor leg finished off the race. CBA finished second, 25-hundredths of a second behind the Indians and one-hundredth ahead of Ocean.
We really dont look to see how far ahead the other teams are, Newman said. We just go as hard as we can.
His butterfly leg of the medley relay was just the first big swim of the night for Yodonis, who later placed second in the 200 individual medley before winning the 100 butterfly in 52.52, despite being the No. 8 seed.
Yodonis had a solid, but unspectacular performance at the Ocean County Championships last month, placing third in both the 50 and 100 freestyles. He said he was sore after some rough practices the week before that meet and it caused him to lose focus. That wasnt a problem Saturday.
After we won that (relay) I was so pumped, Yodonis said. I was really excited, and I just wanted to get after that 2 IM and fly. I just wanted to stay focused and keep it up.
CBA outscored second-place Toms River North, 413-209.5 and Toms River South was third with 189 points.
The Colts Sean Dunne, James Malgieri, Curtis Meade and Alex DAnna combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in a meet-record 1:28.82, beating the previous mark, set last year by another CBA team that included Dunne, by eight-hundredths of a second.
Lynch won the 200 individual medley in 1:57.34 and the 100 backstroke in 51.73 to break his own meet record, and Mahoney won the 100 freestyle in 47.29 before taking the 100 breaststroke in a meet-record 58.39. The previous record, 58.90, was held by former CBA standout Harrison Cefalo, the 2011 APP Boys Swimmer of the Year.
Toms River Norths Zach Molloy, Matt Kazanowsky, Will Molloy and Greg Hirtes won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:14.38. That broke the previous meet record, 3:16.84, set by another Mariners relay in 2006.
Freehold Townships Ryan O'Neill won the 200 freestyle in 1:44.19, Toms River East's Brian Capozzola won the 50 freestyle in 21.84 and Point Boros Philip Binaco took the 500 freestyle in 4:43.51.
